Holiday Spending Tips
Posted by Rhonda on Wednesday Dec 17, 2008With the developments in the financial markets over the past six months we may all be feeling a bit more watchful with how we spend our holiday funds this year. Certainly most of you are all prepared for your Christmas celebrations, but in case you’re not quite ready in the gift giving department; here are some helpful tips to stretch your dollar.
Step # 1 Gift List And Budget
List of each person you will be buying a gift for this year niece, nephew, parents, friends etc. Before you start shopping, set up your budget for gifts, and the parties you may be attending or hosting.
Your list should have all the names to buy for with the budget you have set for each person. For each event/party you will be attending for the holidays, set a limit for the gift or amount you will be spending. Always buy a couple extra hostess gifts for those last minute invites. Set a budget for each party you will host yourself.
Step # 2 Who Wants What List
For your own children, they probably have listed the gifts in the order of importance, if not, have them clarify it so you know what is the most important thing they receive.
Beside the other names, write gift ideas each person would like. You should ideally have at least two items that fit your budget.
Each event or party should have an appropriate gift item beside it. I like to have two or three choices for all my events. This makes the shopping or preparation a little easier.
Step # 3 Where To Go To Get It
Decide which stores you will need to visit for each gift, try to keep it to the least amount of stops. For every store you will be shopping at, choose a highlight colour (Home Depot and Dad’s Drill or Billy’s iPOD and Future Shop) with the stores and the gift colour coded. As you pick up a gift for each person, cross them off your list.
Shop early on a weekday (less shoppers = more help). If possible, this will not only give you your best selection but it will also help you relax and truly enjoy your holiday season.
Most importantly, remember it is the sentiment, not the item. More than other times, this year is about picking the right gift to suit the person. Cost may not be the object. Personal, unique and individual gifts touch the heart and supersede what the cost is.
Happy Organized Holidays to you all!

It’s a little late for shopping tips, but this works all year.
Take a list of sizes (shoes, shirts/blouses, pants, etc.) of everyone in your family and any friends or relatives on your gift list. Also take measurements for bed linens, window curtains, bathroom, or any other household item for which you might find something irresistible.
Try to find a baby sitter for your child or children. Trade with a friend, if necessary. This is particularly for holiday shopping and the post-holiday shopping and returning.
Good luck.
